Sound insulation between floors
In a flat or a house with bedrooms above a living area, the underlay does more to reduce impact noise passing between floors than the carpet fibre itself, so an acoustic-rated underlay is worth discussing where noise transfer has previously been a problem.
- An acoustic underlay reduces impact sound transfer to the room below more effectively than upgrading the carpet alone
- Lease conditions in some flats specify a minimum underlay performance for bedroom flooring above another dwelling
- Carpet generally performs better than hard flooring for reducing footstep noise between floors without additional soundproofing
