Re-securing boards

Loose boards are screwed down into the joists below, rather than simply nailed, since screws hold far better against the repeated flex that causes squeaking. Where original nail holes have widened, fixings are relocated slightly to bite into sound timber.

Why do floorboards squeak?

Can new flooring be fitted straight over squeaky boards?
