Squeaks near stairs and landings
Staircases squeak for a related but distinct reason, the treads and risers rub against each other or against the stringer as fixings loosen, rather than a joist moving underneath a flat board.
Landing boards at the top of a staircase often take more foot traffic in a smaller area than elsewhere in the house, which is why they're commonly the first place a squeak shows up in an older property.
