Fixing Gaps in a Laminate Floor — Rochester

Not all laminate gapping needs a new floor. Rochester survey checks expansion gaps and humidity before recommending repair.

Fault diagnosis & repair page — For Rochester homeowners with gaps opening up between laminate boards who want to know the cause and whether it's fixable.

Gapping isn't always fixable without lifting boards. Whether it is depends on where the gap is, how wide it's got, and whether the click joint itself has been damaged by the movement, which sometimes happens once a gap has been open for a long time.

Water damage calls from properties off the Delce often start as a small stain that grows once the subfloor has absorbed enough to swell.

Underfloor heating and laminate gapping

  • Laminate rated for underfloor heating usually copes with normal operating temperatures, but rapid temperature swings increase movement
  • Programming heating to ramp up and down gradually, rather than switching on and off sharply, reduces stress on joints
  • A wider perimeter gap is usually recommended where underfloor heating is fitted, to allow for the extra movement
  • Check the manufacturer's maximum surface temperature rating before assuming underfloor heating is compatible with existing laminate

Doorway and threshold gapping specifically

Doorways are one of the most common places for a persistent gap to appear, because the laminate run often continues from one room into another with a threshold bar in between, and that bar can pin the floor at exactly the point where it most needs to move.

A floating threshold strip that allows the laminate underneath to still shift slightly usually solves this, whereas a bar screwed straight through both floors locks the movement and pushes the gap somewhere else along the run instead.

Rochester context for this fault

Café and shop floors near Rochester High Street in Rochester take repeated trolley and chair impact, so localised wear repairs are more common than whole-floor jobs.

Properties backing onto the Delce sometimes report vibration-related fastener loosening in engineered boards, a fault that is easy to miss on a quick look.

What we need to see before pricing

  • Check your ME1 property's heating pattern, gaps often correlate with heating coming on for the season
  • Have the age and fitting date of the laminate ready if known
  • Expect an expansion gap check at the perimeter as standard during any survey

Reading the direction a gap is opening

  • A gap that runs the full width of the room at one end usually means the floor has shifted as a whole block
  • A gap that widens gradually along its length points to uneven restriction somewhere along the run
  • Gaps appearing in a rough grid pattern across the whole floor usually mean general humidity shrinkage rather than a single restriction
  • A gap that only appears under direct sun through patio doors is usually thermal, not humidity-related

The order we do things in

  1. Step 1

    Review heating programme

Check whether sharp heating cycles or underfloor heating are contributing to movement.

  2. Step 2

    Inspect threshold fixings

Check whether a threshold bar is pinning the floor at a doorway restriction.

  3. Step 3

    Free the perimeter if pinned

Refit skirting or scotia to the wall rather than the floor if it's restricting movement.

Short answers to fair questions

Can I just push the boards back together myself?

It's not usually possible to close a gap by pushing boards, since the whole floating floor has shifted as a unit against a restriction; the fix is normally at the restriction itself, not the gap.

Why do gaps appear worse in winter?

Central heating dries indoor air, which draws moisture out of the laminate core and causes it to shrink slightly across the whole floor, a pattern that usually reverses as humidity rises again in warmer months.

Will replacement boards match the existing laminate exactly?

Not always, ranges get discontinued and colour can shift slightly between production batches, so an exact invisible match isn't guaranteed even with the same product code.

Does a threshold bar cause gapping?

It can if it's screwed straight through the floating floor at a doorway, pinning the laminate at that point and forcing any expansion movement to happen elsewhere along the run instead.
