Engineered Wood Cupping or Gapping

Why engineered wood floors cup, crown or gap, and the humidity and subfloor fixes that resolve it.

Engineered wood is more dimensionally stable than solid wood, but it still contains real timber in its top layer, and that timber responds to moisture. Cupping — where the edges of each board rise higher than the centre — and gapping — where boards pull apart — are the two most common signs that moisture levels have shifted since the floor was fitted.

They're opposite problems with a shared cause: an imbalance of moisture either in the wood itself or in the subfloor underneath it.

New engineered wood floors are particularly vulnerable to cupping in their first few months if a room isn't properly ventilated after fitting, or if cleaning is done with excess water rather than a barely-damp mop, since even small amounts of surface moisture can be absorbed unevenly while the floor is still settling.

  • Cupping: board edges higher than the middle, floor feels slightly wavy underfoot
  • Crowning: the opposite — board centres higher than the edges, usually after a cupped floor is sanded too early
  • Gapping: visible dark lines opening between boards, usually widening in winter

Why cupping happens

Cupping is almost always caused by the underside of the board absorbing more moisture than the top — commonly from a damp subfloor, a spill left too long, or high humidity in the room. The underside expands more than the top, curling the edges upward.

Why gapping happens

Gapping is the reverse: the wood has dried out and shrunk, usually from low winter humidity combined with central heating running for long periods. Minor seasonal gapping that closes again in summer is normal in real wood floors; gaps that don't close are more of a concern.

How we diagnose which is happening

We take moisture readings from both the subfloor and the flooring itself, check room humidity levels, and look at how long the problem has been present and whether it changes with the seasons. This distinguishes a genuine moisture fault from normal seasonal movement.

Fixing cupping and gapping

  • Address the moisture source first — subfloor drying, ventilation, or a dehumidifier
  • Allow the floor to fully acclimatise back to normal moisture levels before any sanding
  • Only sand a cupped floor once it has flattened out again, otherwise it will crown once dried
  • Replace individual boards where cupping or gapping has caused permanent damage

Preventing it long term

Maintaining reasonably stable indoor humidity — roughly 40-60% — is the single biggest factor in keeping engineered wood flat and tight. We can advise on humidity control and appropriate underlay/subfloor prep at the point of fitting to reduce the risk from the outset.

The role of humidity control equipment

In homes prone to noticeable seasonal humidity swings, a simple humidifier in winter and a dehumidifier in summer can meaningfully reduce the extent of cupping and gapping over the years, particularly in older properties with less consistent heating and ventilation than newer builds.

This is a relatively low-cost step compared with repeated board replacement, and it's something we're happy to advise on at the point of fitting for customers who are especially keen to protect a higher-value engineered wood investment.

Frequently asked questions

Will cupped engineered wood flatten out on its own?
Often yes, once the source of moisture is removed and the floor is given time to dry out and re-acclimatise, though this can take several weeks.
Is a small seasonal gap normal?
Yes, minor gaps that open in winter and close in summer are a normal characteristic of real wood floors reacting to indoor humidity changes.
Can I sand a cupped floor to fix it?
Not while it's still cupped. Sanding too early removes wood from the raised edges, and once the board dries and flattens fully it can end up crowned instead. Always let it settle first.
What moisture level should my subfloor be at before fitting?
This depends on the subfloor type and the flooring manufacturer's specification, which is exactly what we check during survey and again immediately before fitting.
