Waterproofing against leaks and overflows
Washing machine hose failures and overflow incidents are common enough that utility room flooring should be treated with the same waterproofing standard as a bathroom, including sealed seams and edges rather than a standard domestic vinyl.
- Sheet vinyl with heat-welded seams gives the best protection against a sudden leak spreading under the floor
- Coving the flooring slightly up the wall around appliance positions adds an extra barrier against splashing
- A tanked or sealed subfloor is worth considering in utility rooms prone to condensation or previous leaks
