
Sheet Vinyl Seam Welding: What It Involves
What seam welding is, why it's used on sheet vinyl in wet areas and commercial settings, and how it differs from a standard seam.
Wherever two pieces of sheet vinyl meet, that join needs sealing properly — otherwise it becomes a weak point where water, dirt and grit can get underneath. Seam welding is the process of fusing those joints using heat and a matching welding rod, creating a join that's effectively part of the sheet rather than a visible gap.
It's commonly specified for wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens, and it's close to universal in commercial settings such as kitchens, washrooms and healthcare environments where hygiene and water resistance matter most.
The quality of a weld comes down to timing and temperature as much as the equipment used — too cool or too fast a pass and the rod sits on the surface without properly fusing to the sheet; too hot and the vinyl scorches or the groove distorts. It's a technique that takes practice on offcuts before a fitter is confident enough to run it on the finished floor, which is one reason seam quality can vary noticeably between installers even using identical materials.

Why seams need attention at all
Sheet vinyl comes in wide rolls, but rooms are rarely narrower than the roll width or perfectly rectangular, so seams are often unavoidable in larger or more complex-shaped rooms. Left unsealed, a seam allows moisture to track underneath, which can lift the vinyl and cause bacterial growth in wet or hygiene-critical spaces.
How hot welding works
The two edges of vinyl are grooved slightly along the seam, and a welding rod — a thin strip of matching vinyl — is fed through a hot air welding gun that melts both the rod and the sheet edges together. Once cooled, the excess weld is trimmed flush, leaving a smooth, continuous, watertight join.
Cold welding as an alternative
For some domestic jobs, a chemical cold weld (a solvent that fuses the seam edges) is used instead of heat welding. It's a neater, quicker option suited to lighter domestic use, though hot welding is generally preferred for genuinely wet or heavy-traffic areas because of its stronger, more durable bond.
Cold welding works by chemically softening and fusing the two vinyl edges together rather than melting in a separate rod, so there's no bead to trim afterwards, which is part of why it can look neater on some products. The trade-off is that it generally doesn't achieve the same degree of watertight, mechanically fused seam as a properly executed hot weld, so it isn't usually specified for genuinely wet or heavily used commercial floors.
Preparing the subfloor before seaming
A welded seam is only as good as what's underneath it. Any unevenness, debris or old adhesive residue at the point where two sheets meet can telegraph through as a visible ridge or cause the seam to sit slightly proud, which then becomes the first point of wear and eventual failure. This is why seam positions are checked against subfloor condition during preparation, not decided purely on room layout.
Where welded seams are essential versus optional
- Essential: commercial kitchens, washrooms, healthcare and food-prep areas
- Strongly recommended: domestic bathrooms, utility rooms, wet rooms
- Optional but tidy: hallways or living areas where a seam falls in a low-moisture zone
Seam placement and planning
Where possible, seams are planned to fall away from high-splash zones such as directly in front of a shower or sink, and away from doorways where they'd see concentrated foot traffic. This planning happens before the sheet is cut, as part of the layout survey.

- Can seams be avoided altogether?
- In smaller rooms, yes, if the room fits within a single roll width. Larger or irregularly shaped rooms will usually need at least one seam, which is planned to be as unobtrusive as possible.
- Is a welded seam visible?
- A well-executed weld is trimmed flush and, on most patterns, is barely noticeable once finished. On plain, pale colours it can be slightly more visible than on patterned designs.
- How long does welding take on an average room?
- It depends on the number and length of seams, but welding is usually completed within the same visit as the main fitting once the vinyl has settled, rather than needing a separate appointment.
