Flooring calculator: work out how much you need

Flooring calculator for laminate, LVT and wood: add each area, choose a cutting allowance and see the m² and packs to order before a free survey.

A quick estimate of square metres and packs for hard flooring, with the checks that a tape measure alone will miss.

Use this flooring calculator to turn your room measurements into a working quantity for laminate, LVT or engineered wood. Add each rectangle of floor separately, including bays, alcoves and the strip that runs into each doorway, then choose a cutting allowance that suits the layout. If you know how many square metres one pack covers, the calculator also rounds up to whole packs.

The result is an estimate for budgeting and comparing products, not an order quantity we would rely on. Our guide to measuring a room for flooring explains where to take each measurement. Before any fitting, a free survey checks the room and the base so the written quote reflects the actual floor.

How to enter awkward rooms

Very few rooms are a perfect rectangle. Split an L-shaped room into two rectangles and enter them as separate areas. Treat a bay window or chimney recess as its own small area rather than stretching the main measurement to cover it. Always measure to the widest point, because the boards have to reach the worst corner, and round each dimension up to the next 10cm.

Include the floor that runs under the door to the centre of the closed door, and any area beneath kitchen units or appliances only if the new floor will genuinely go there. Hallways with several doorways generate more short cuts than their area suggests, so use the higher allowance for them.

Choosing a cutting allowance

Planks are cut at the end of every row and around every obstacle, and the offcut cannot always start the next row. An allowance on top of the measured area covers that. About 7 to 10 percent is usual for a straight plank layout in laminate or LVT; herringbone and diagonal layouts typically need about 15 percent because every edge of the room is cut at an angle.

It also helps to keep a few spare boards after fitting. If a plank is damaged later, a matching piece from the same batch is far easier to use than trying to source the product again.

  • Simple rectangular room, straight lay: lower allowance
  • Alcoves, bays, several doorways or a long hallway: middle allowance
  • Herringbone, chevron or diagonal pattern: higher allowance

Laminate calculator: packs and pack coverage

Laminate and click LVT are sold by the pack, and each pack states the area it covers. Enter that figure and the calculator divides your total, including the allowance, then rounds up. Never round down to save a pack: running short partway through means waiting for another delivery, and a later batch may not match exactly.

Underlay, edge trims and door bars are measured separately. Underlay roughly follows the floor area, while trims are worked out by the length of each edge and threshold. Our laminate flooring fitting service includes these in the written quote.

What the calculator cannot tell you

A measurement shows how much flooring a room needs, not what the base needs before it is laid. Whether the subfloor is flat, dry and sound decides whether smoothing compound, a plywood overlay or a moisture treatment is needed, and that can affect a quote more than the choice of floor. Door clearance after the new floor build-up, the floor it meets in the next room and any change of level are also checked on site.

That is why we survey rather than quote from dimensions alone. Bring your calculator figure along; it is a useful starting point for comparing products at our Gillingham showroom.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a flooring calculator?
It is as accurate as the measurements you enter. It gives a sound estimate for budgeting, but the order quantity should follow a survey that checks the room shape, doorways and layout.
How much extra flooring should I order for waste?
About 7 to 10 percent is usual for a straight plank layout in laminate or LVT. Herringbone and diagonal layouts typically need about 15 percent.
Should I measure in metres or feet?
Metres. Flooring is priced and sold per square metre in the UK, so measuring in metres avoids conversion and rounding errors.
Does the calculator work for carpet or sheet vinyl?
Not reliably. Roll products come in fixed widths, so the quantity depends on how the widths fit the room rather than on area alone. A survey works that out properly.
