A gym floor takes a different beating in every zone of the same building. The free weight platform absorbs dropped Olympic bars and dumbbells landing point-load first, the studio floor needs give underfoot for group classes and impact aerobics, and the cardio deck under treadmills and rowers takes sustained vibration rather than shock. Specifying one product for the whole space almost always under-serves at least one of those zones.
We work from the loading, not the look. Free weight areas take the highest single point loads in the building, from a dropped 50kg bar to a slammed kettlebell. Thickness alone does not solve this: density and the interlayer construction determine how much of that energy is absorbed before it reaches the subfloor and how quickly the surface recovers between drops.

Studio, cardio and functional training zones
A studio used for classes needs a floor with enough give for impact aerobics without becoming unstable underfoot for balance work, while a cardio deck under fixed machines is judged on wear resistance and vibration damping rather than shock absorption. Functional training areas that mix bodyweight work, sleds and light free weight sit somewhere between the two and are often the zone most likely to be mis-specified.

Subfloor loading and structural checks before ordering
Rubber flooring adds dead load and the subfloor beneath a free weight zone needs to be capable of taking repeated dynamic impact, not just the static weight of the rack. On upper floors or over suspended timber decks this is checked before product is ordered, not discovered on fit day.
Where the existing subfloor is uneven, has movement joints, or has residual adhesive from a previous floor, we identify this at survey so preparation is priced and programmed alongside the rubber itself rather than found as an extra on site.
Structural noise transfer to neighbouring units and floors below
Dropped weight and jumping impact travel through a slab as structural-borne noise, which is a different problem to airborne sound and is not solved by carpet or underlay alone. In mixed-use buildings, above retail, or in shared commercial cores, this is often the point that triggers a lease condition or a complaint from a neighbouring tenant.

Method statements, phasing and out of hours fitting
Gym refits are usually done in a closure window, either overnight, over a weekend, or zone by zone while the rest of the club stays open to members. We provide a method statement and programme before work starts, covering access, isolation of live areas, and the sequence tiles or rolls go down in.

- Can one rubber product cover the whole gym floor?
- It can, but it usually means over-specifying the lower-impact zones or under-specifying the free weight platform. We generally recommend zoning thickness and density to activity rather than one product throughout, which controls cost where impact is lowest.

- Rubber flooring is rated by manufacturers against defined drop tests, typically a set weight dropped from a set height onto the product over a rigid base, with the result expressed as an impact or shock absorption rating you can compare between products.
