Searching for a fitter is a different job from searching for a shop. This page is about the labour: who turns up, what they do to your subfloor, how the carpet is held down and what happens to the old one. We fit with our own installers rather than subcontracting to whoever is free that week, which is why the same team that measures usually fits. Work runs out of the Gillingham warehouse, so an extra length of gripper, a different door bar or a replacement underlay is a short trip rather than a rescheduled day.

Gripper, double stick and stairs
- Domestic rooms are fitted on gripper rods over underlay and power stretched, which is what keeps the surface flat over years rather than months.
- Long corridors, offices and communal areas are usually double stuck, bonding underlay to the floor and carpet to the underlay so trolleys and heavy footfall cannot creep it.
- Stairs are cut per flight, dressed into each riser and nosing, and pattern matched on the turn. Winders take longer than straight flights and are priced that way.
- Doorways get a bar chosen for the floor next door, so a carpet-to-LVT threshold sits level instead of forming a trip edge.
What happens on fitting day
- Step 1Survey and measure
We measure every room, doorway and stair riser, check the subfloor for damp, movement and loose boards, and note where seams can be hidden. Nothing is estimated from a floor plan.
- Step 2Plan the roll
Carpet comes in fixed widths, so the plan decides how much you buy. We set out the cuts to keep pile direction consistent through open doorways and to keep joins out of traffic lanes.
- Step 3Uplift and prepare
Old carpet, gripper and underlay come up and go away. Boards are screwed where they squeak, nail heads punched, and concrete latexed where the surface is pitted.
- Step 4Fit and stretch
New gripper, new underlay, then the carpet is power stretched onto the rods so it stays flat instead of rippling in a year. Doorways get bars matched to the adjoining floor.
- Step 5Finish and check
Edges trimmed into the perimeter, stairs dressed into each riser, furniture put back, and the room vacuumed before we leave. We walk it with you before signing off.
