Safety flooring instead carries mineral particles, usually aluminium oxide, silicon carbide or quartz, dispersed through the thickness of the wear layer itself. As the surface wears down over years of foot traffic and cleaning, fresh aggregate is exposed underneath, so the grip does not disappear the way a surface-only texture would.

This is the detail that gets missed when people compare safety flooring to standard vinyl on price alone. A textured decorative vinyl might feel similarly grippy on day one, but that texture is on the surface only. Once it has been mopped, buffed and walked on for a couple of years, the texture flattens and the slip resistance drops with it. In general terms, an R10 floor with a comfortable PTV margin suits a busy kitchen prep area, R11 suits areas with routine grease or water underfoot, and R12 is reserved for the wettest, highest-risk zones such as commercial dishwash or abattoir-style spaces.

We are cautious about quoting exact PTV thresholds as universal rules, because the right figure depends on the specific risk assessment for that room, the footwear worn there and how the floor is cleaned day to day. What we can say plainly is that a floor bought for its R rating alone, then run with the wrong cleaning chemical, will not deliver the PTV it was tested at. The rating on the sample is only ever the starting point.

Barefoot zones need a different face to shod areas

A commercial kitchen floor is walked on in boots, so a coarser aggregate that would be uncomfortable or hard to clean under bare skin is fine there. Shower rooms, changing areas, swimming pool surrounds and some clinical bathing rooms are walked on barefoot, so the surface has to manage wet grip without abrading skin, which usually means a different, finer barefoot-rated safety vinyl rather than the shod-area product used through the rest of the building.

Getting this wrong in either direction causes problems. A barefoot-grade floor laid in a busy commercial kitchen wears through faster than it should under boot traffic and trolley wheels. A shod-grade floor laid in a wet changing room can be genuinely uncomfortable and, depending on the specific product, may not carry the barefoot slip certification the space actually needs.

It is standard practice in any kitchen, clinical room or food production area and is usually specified rather than optional.

A well-run weld is barely visible as a fine line and does not catch a mop or a trolley wheel. A poorly run one shows a raised or sunken bead, gaps at the joint, or scorch marks either side from an overheated gun. The cleaning regime that keeps the slip rating intact

A safety floor's grip depends on the aggregate staying exposed and clean, which means the correct neutral detergent at the manufacturer's stated dilution, applied with a scrubber drier or mop and bucket system that lifts soil away rather than smearing it, followed by a proper rinse. Skipping the rinse or overdosing the detergent leaves a residue film sitting on top of the aggregate, and once that film builds up it fills the texture and the floor becomes noticeably slicker even though nothing about the vinyl itself has changed.
