
Underlay, Trims and Accessories
Underlay, gripper, DPM sheet, door bars, scotia and stair nosings fitted across Kent. Specified to the floor above and the subfloor below, not sold as an afterthought.
Underlay and trims rarely get chosen on their own. They get decided by whatever is going down on top, and by the room, subfloor and neighbours around it. A carpet fitter reaching for a random roll of foam because it was on the van is how floors end up feeling wrong within a year, either too soft underfoot, too noisy through a ceiling, or too thick to close the door over. We specify underlay the same way we specify the floor covering itself, against the job in front of us.
The accessories side is where a fitted floor is told apart from a laid one. Gripper rods, door bars, scotia, beading, stair nosings and threshold profiles are small pieces of metal, timber and plastic that carry real load: they stop carpet lifting off gripper at a doorway, hide the expansion gap a laminate floor needs to move, and stop a stair edge wearing through in six months. Get them wrong and the floor looks unfinished even when the main material is expensive and well fitted.

Crumb rubber, sponge, PU foam and felt: four constructions, four jobs
Crumb rubber underlay is dense, heavy and firm underfoot. It is made from recycled tyre rubber bonded under pressure, which gives it a long working life under heavy foot traffic and makes it the usual choice under wool and wool-mix carpets in busy households or hallways. It does not compress permanently the way cheaper foams can, so carpet pile keeps its bounce for longer, but it is a poor sound absorber on its own compared with a bonded felt or a layered acoustic product.
PU foam (polyurethane) is the lightest and softest of the four, and it is what most budget carpet packages default to. It gives an immediately plush feel underfoot but the cheaper grades compress and go flat within a couple of years under regular walking, especially on stairs and in front of sofas, which is when carpet starts to look and feel tired even though the pile itself is fine. Higher density PU foams close that gap but move closer to crumb rubber pricing.
Felt and felt-rubber composites sit between the two: firm, dense and good at sound deadening, traditionally used under natural fibre carpets like wool berbers and sisal-look weaves where a very stable, non-stretch backing matters. Sponge rubber, the ribbed waffle type, is now mostly specified for lower-traffic domestic rooms or as an entry-level option; it is comfortable but the least durable of the four under sustained heavy use.

Tog rating against thickness: two numbers that pull in different directions
Tog measures thermal resistance, not comfort or quality, and it is easy to assume a higher tog underlay is automatically better. It is not: a high-tog underlay under carpet over underfloor heating will insulate the heat inside the subfloor instead of letting it into the room, which is why underfloor heating manufacturers usually cap combined carpet and underlay tog at around 2.5, sometimes lower. Where there is no underfloor heating, a higher tog genuinely helps keep a ground floor room warmer underfoot, particularly over a suspended timber floor with a ventilated void beneath it.
Thickness and tog are related but not the same measurement, and a thick underlay is not always a high one for tog, especially with open-cell foams. What thickness actually governs is door clearance, transition height at thresholds and how much the carpet needs to stretch to seat properly on gripper. A very thick underlay under a stair carpet can also make the nosing feel spongy and less safe underfoot, which is one of the reasons stair underlay is usually specified thinner and firmer than the underlay used in the rooms either side.

Acoustic underlay for flats: impact sound is a different problem to comfort
Most leasehold flats carry a lease condition requiring a minimum Impact Sound Insulation rating, commonly a stated dB reduction figure or reference to Building Regulations Part E performance, and this applies to hard floors far more strictly than carpet. The underlay has to be tested and rated for impact sound, not just sold as acoustic, because footfall noise travels through the floor structure into the flat below as vibration, not airborne sound, and ordinary comfort underlay does very little to stop it.
For LVT, laminate and engineered wood in a flat, that usually means a dedicated acoustic underlay, sometimes combined with a decoupling layer, chosen to meet the specific dB figure the lease or management company asks for. We keep the test certificate for the product used on record for exactly this reason, because a managing agent or a neighbour's complaint can ask for proof after the job is finished, and a verbal assurance is not evidence.
For carpet in a flat the requirement is usually easier to meet because carpet plus a reasonable underlay performs well for impact sound by nature, but it is still worth checking the lease wording rather than assuming, since some blocks specify a minimum underlay thickness or type regardless of floor covering.

Integrated DPM sheets: what the membrane is actually stopping
A damp proof membrane sheet, either as a standalone polythene layer or built into a combined underlay product, is there to stop residual moisture vapour rising from a concrete or screed subfloor into a moisture-sensitive floor covering above it. It is not a fix for standing water, rising damp from a failed damp proof course, or a leak; it manages normal residual construction moisture in a slab that has cured but not fully dried, which is common in newer builds and extensions.
LVT, laminate and engineered wood all benefit from a DPM layer over concrete or screed, and some manufacturers make it a warranty condition rather than an optional extra. Carpet is more forgiving of a small amount of residual moisture because it is not adhered edge to edge and does not swell or delaminate the way a laminate core or engineered wood veneer can, so DPM sheet is specified less often under carpet unless a moisture meter reading on the day flags a concern.
We take a moisture reading before fitting on any solid subfloor as standard practice, and where the reading sits above the safe threshold for the chosen floor we specify a DPM layer or, in more serious cases, recommend a liquid damp proof membrane applied to the slab before any underlay goes down at all.
Gripper, door bars and threshold profiles: metals, heights and what each one solves
Gripper rod is the row of angled pins fixed around a room's perimeter that carpet stretches onto and hooks into, and it needs to sit close enough to the wall that carpet tucks fully into the gap without a visible gap or a lifted edge, but not so close that it catches skirting. Getting gripper positioning wrong is one of the most common reasons carpet lifts at edges within months of fitting, and it is a fitting error rather than a carpet fault, which is why we set gripper ourselves rather than relying on whatever was left from a previous fit.
Door bars and threshold profiles cover the transition between two different floor heights or materials at a doorway, and the right one depends on both the height difference and the materials either side. A single-floor T-bar suits carpet meeting carpet at roughly equal heights; a reducer or ramp profile handles a step down to a thinner LVT or laminate; a cover strip in aluminium, brass or matt-finish nickel handles a bigger height difference or a wet-room threshold where a screwed-down bar is more secure than an adhesive-only strip.
Metal choice is partly aesthetic and partly practical: aluminium is the standard low-cost workhorse, brass suits older or higher-spec properties and takes a polish, and satin or matt nickel finishes are usually chosen to disappear against grey or pale floors rather than stand out. Height and profile matter more than finish for how well a threshold actually performs day to day.

Scotia and beading against lifting the skirting
Scotia and quadrant beading close the expansion gap left around a laminate or engineered wood floor's edge, and pinning it to the skirting board rather than the floor is what lets the floor beneath continue to expand and contract with temperature and humidity without the beading splitting or the floor buckling at the perimeter. Beading nailed or glued to the floor itself defeats the point of leaving an expansion gap in the first place, and it is a shortcut we see on jobs we are asked to fix after another fitter has moved on.
Lifting the skirting board instead of scotia gives a cleaner finished line with no visible beading, which suits period properties and higher-spec finishes, but it takes longer, risks damaging paintwork or plaster behind the skirting, and is not always possible where skirting is fixed with adhesive rather than nails. It is worth deciding this before the floor goes down, because retrofitting a lifted-skirting finish after fitting means removing and refitting the new floor's edge as well as the skirting.
Colour and profile matching matters more than it seems: scotia in the wrong tone against the floor reads as an obvious afterthought, and we generally match it to the floor rather than the skirting, since the eye follows the floor line first.
Stair nosings: the trim that takes the most abuse in the house
A stair nosing covers the leading edge of each tread, and on carpeted stairs it usually takes the form of a metal or timber edge protector fitted before the carpet, or a soft nosing built into the underlay and carpet fit itself to stop the front edge of each step wearing through before the rest of the tread. On LVT or laminate stairs the nosing is a structural profile, not decorative, because the front edge of a stair tread takes more repeated impact and abrasion than any flat area of floor in the house.
Stair nosing choice also has a safety dimension that flat flooring does not: a worn, loose or mismatched nosing changes the depth a foot expects to find on the way down, which is a genuine trip risk on a staircase used daily. We treat stair nosing as part of the specification, not an accessory added at the end, and check tread depth and existing nosing condition on every staircase survey.
Adhesives and tackifiers: matched to the floor, the subfloor and the room
Adhesive choice depends on the floor covering, the subfloor material and the conditions in the room, and using a general-purpose adhesive because it is what is on the van is a common cause of failed LVT and vinyl fits: lifting seams, tenting at joints, or a floor that never fully bonds and telegraphs every subfloor imperfection through the surface. Pressure-sensitive adhesives suit LVT over a stable, prepared subfloor; hard-set adhesives suit higher-traffic commercial LVT and safety flooring where the floor needs to resist point loads without shifting.
Tackifiers, used mainly with carpet tiles and some safety flooring, hold the product in place without a full permanent bond, which allows tiles to be lifted and replaced individually if one is damaged, a genuine advantage in commercial spaces where a single stained or worn tile can be swapped without disturbing the rest of the floor. Getting adhesive selection wrong is invisible on day one and expensive to fix later, because it usually means lifting and relaying the floor rather than a simple repair.
Why the accessories decide whether a floor looks fitted or laid
Two identical floors, one finished with mismatched, ill-fitting trims and one finished properly, read completely differently even though the main material cost the same. A gap at a threshold, a wrong-height door bar, or scotia in the wrong colour draws the eye immediately, because trims sit exactly where people look: doorways, stair edges and skirting lines. The floor itself can be first-rate and still look like an afterthought if the finishing details were an afterthought.
This is the reason we specify underlay and trims as part of the same quote as the floor covering, rather than leaving them to be sorted on the day. It also means we can source less common items, like a specific metal finish for a threshold or a matched stair nosing colour, ahead of the fitting date rather than substituting whatever is closest on the fitting van.

- Does a thicker underlay always feel better underfoot?
- Not necessarily. A thick, low-density foam can feel plush at first but compress and go flat within a couple of years under regular traffic, while a firmer, slightly thinner crumb rubber or felt underlay holds its shape for longer. Thickness also affects door clearance and how well carpet seats on gripper, so it needs balancing against those, not chosen for softness alone.
- Can I use the same underlay under carpet on stairs as in the rooms next to them?
- We would not recommend it. Stair underlay is usually specified thinner and firmer than room underlay, because a thick, soft underlay on a stair tread can make the nosing feel spongy and less predictable underfoot, which matters for safety on a staircase used every day.
- What tog underlay should I use with underfloor heating?
- Check the underfloor heating manufacturer's combined tog limit for carpet plus underlay together, which is commonly around 2.5 tog. A higher tog underlay traps heat in the subfloor rather than letting it into the room, so this is one situation where a lower tog is the right specification, not a compromise.
- Do I need acoustic underlay if I live in a flat?
- Check your lease first, since most leasehold flats set a minimum impact sound insulation requirement, particularly for hard floors like LVT, laminate or engineered wood. Carpet with ordinary underlay usually meets typical requirements without extra specification, but hard floors generally need a dedicated, tested acoustic underlay to comply.
- What does a DPM sheet actually protect against?
- A damp proof membrane manages residual moisture vapour rising from a concrete or screed subfloor that has cured but not fully dried. It does not fix rising damp from a failed damp course or standing water from a leak, both of which need a different repair before any floor covering goes down.
- Why has my carpet lifted at the edge of a doorway?
- This is almost always a gripper positioning or fitting fault rather than a fault in the carpet itself. If gripper sits too far from the wall, or the carpet was not stretched fully onto it, the edge can work loose over time, especially in a doorway where foot traffic passes over the same spot repeatedly.
- Should scotia be pinned to the floor or the skirting board?
- It should be pinned to the skirting board, not the floor, so the laminate or engineered wood floor beneath can keep expanding and contracting with temperature and humidity without the beading splitting or the floor buckling at the perimeter.
- What threshold bar do I need where two different floor heights meet?
- It depends on the height difference: a T-bar suits two floors of roughly equal height, a reducer bar handles a moderate step down to a thinner floor, and a ramp profile or screwed cover strip handles a bigger height difference or a wet-room threshold. We measure this on survey rather than guessing on the day.
