Best Flooring for a Conservatory

Why conservatories destroy the wrong flooring: temperature swings, sunlight, condensation and slab movement, and the floors that actually cope.

For anyone flooring a conservatory or garden room and worried about heat, damp and fading.

A conservatory is the harshest environment for flooring in a British house. It can reach thirty five degrees on a July afternoon and drop close to freezing overnight in January, and that daily swing is far more punishing than steady heat.

Add strong ultraviolet light, winter condensation running off the glazing, and a slab that is often thinner and less well insulated than the main house, and you have a room where the wrong choice fails within two years.

Why glue down beats floating here

A floating floor moves as one large sheet. In a room with a thirty degree daily swing that movement is significant, and it shows as gaps at the perimeter, peaking in the middle or a floor that has crept away from one wall.

A fully bonded floor cannot move, because every tile is held by adhesive. Use an adhesive specifically rated for high temperature and conservatory use, not a general purpose pressure sensitive tackifier that can soften.

Sunlight and fading

Everything fades in a conservatory eventually. Mid tones fade less visibly than very dark or very pale ones, and a floor with visible grain or texture disguises uneven fading better than a flat colour.

Check the light fastness rating before you buy, and never leave a rug in the same position for years, because the outline will remain when you move it.

Damp, slab and threshold checks first

  • Test the slab for moisture, because many conservatory bases have a poor or missing damp proof membrane
  • Look for a cold bridge at the perimeter where condensation collects, and deal with it before fitting
  • Check the level difference at the threshold into the house and plan the transition trim early
  • Confirm the slab is flat, since conservatory bases are frequently poured less carefully than house floors

Insulation changes the whole answer

If the conservatory has been upgraded with a solid insulated roof, proper glazing and a heat source, it stops behaving like a conservatory and starts behaving like a room. At that point engineered wood or even carpet becomes reasonable.

If it is still a glass box used seasonally, treat it as an external environment and choose glue-down LVT or a good sheet vinyl.

Ventilation and condensation control

Most conservatory flooring failures are moisture failures rather than heat failures. Warm air meets cold glass overnight, water runs down the frames and collects at the floor perimeter, and any covering that can absorb it eventually does.

Trickle vents left open, a small extract fan or simply opening a window for part of the day makes a substantial difference. Where the room is used seasonally and closed off for months, leave the internal door open so the air is not standing still against the glass.

At the perimeter, seal the junction between floor and frame with a flexible sealant rather than relying on beading alone. It keeps run-off on top of the floor where you can wipe it, rather than letting it travel underneath where you cannot.

Practical detailing that avoids callbacks

Leave a proper expansion allowance under the beading at the perimeter, even on a bonded floor. Bring the material into the room and let it acclimatise there, not in the hallway, because it needs to settle at the temperature it will live at.

Fit on a mild day where possible. Bonding a floor at thirty degrees means it will be at its maximum expansion at the moment it is fixed.

Making the room comfortable as well as durable

A hard floor in a conservatory is cold from October to April, and that is often what stops the room being used rather than the flooring itself failing. Electric underfloor heating under glue-down LVT is the usual answer, and in a small conservatory it is a modest cost.

Insulating the floor is the other half of it. Many conservatory bases have little or no insulation beneath the slab, and adding an insulated board layer as part of the flooring build makes a far bigger difference to comfort than any covering choice.

A large washable rug in the seating area gives you softness where you sit without introducing carpet at the perimeter, which is where condensation and damp problems begin in this room.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit laminate in a conservatory?
We advise against it. The daily temperature swing and winter condensation cause gapping and edge swelling, and most manufacturers exclude conservatories from the warranty.
Is LVT safe in a conservatory?
Glue-down LVT with a high temperature adhesive is the most reliable choice. Click LVT is more prone to joint movement.
Will my floor fade?
To some extent, yes. Mid tones and textured surfaces disguise it best, and blinds make a substantial difference.
Can carpet go in a conservatory?
Only in a properly insulated and heated garden room. In an uninsulated conservatory, condensation at the perimeter causes damp and mould in the backing.
