
Bumps and Ridges Telegraphing Through Vinyl
Lumps, ridges and old joint lines telegraphing through a vinyl floor come from the base below. What causes it and what removes it.
Direct answer: vinyl shows you what is underneath it. It is thin and flexible by nature, so any lump, screw head, board joint or leftover crumb of adhesive under the covering eventually reads through the surface as a bump or a line.
This is not wear and it is not a manufacturing flaw. It is the base telling on itself, and it usually becomes visible within weeks of fitting as the covering relaxes and takes the shape of what it is lying on.
The awkward part is that the covering itself is normally fine. The fix lives underneath, which is why the honest answer to telegraphing is almost always about preparation rather than replacement material.

What telegraphing looks like on a real floor
- Straight lines echoing the joints of the boards below
- Small round bumps at regular spacing, following screw or nail heads
- A raised ridge where two sheets of the old covering used to overlap
- Random pimples where grit or dried adhesive was left behind
Why thin coverings are the most revealing
Sheet vinyl and thinner tiles are the least forgiving of anything. They bend to whatever they sit on and have no rigidity to bridge with, so a two-millimetre lump becomes a two-millimetre bump on show under a low winter sun coming across the floor.
Thicker rigid planks hide small imperfections better, but they trade one problem for another: instead of showing the lump, they bridge over the dip beside it and give you a hollow spot or a rocking plank instead.
The base failures behind most cases
Nearly every telegraphed floor comes back to one of a short list of preparation shortcuts, and each of them is quicker to avoid than to correct.
- Old covering, adhesive residue or paint left on the base
- Timber boards not overlaid, so every joint and fixing shows
- Fixings left standing proud of the deck rather than punched below it
- Smoothing compound applied too thin to bury what was under it
- Base swept rather than vacuumed, leaving grit under the sheet

How we assess it before quoting
We look across the floor at a low angle rather than straight down, because raking light reveals ridges that are invisible from above. Then we lift an edge or a doorway junction to see what the base is made of, how it is fixed and what has been left on it. That determines whether the answer is an overlay, a skim or a full strip and prepare.
Commercial and larger floors need a stricter base
Across a big open area the eye picks up ridges far more readily than in a small room, and in shops and offices the lighting is usually bright, even and unhelpful in that respect. On larger jobs we plan preparation as its own stage with its own drying time, rather than treating it as something squeezed into fitting day.
What putting it right involves
- Timber decks — overlay with ply or hardboard, joints staggered and fixings set below the surface
- Solid bases — grind or scrape off residue, then apply smoothing compound at a proper depth
- Isolated proud fixings — punch down, fill locally, prime and relay that area
- Existing covering to be reused — rarely practical, since lifting thin vinyl tends to tear it
Can the existing covering be saved?
Sometimes, if it is a small area and the covering is thick enough to come up without splitting. Thin sheet vinyl generally does not survive being lifted and refitted, so it is fair to expect new material as part of correcting a telegraphed floor. We will say which of the two you are looking at before any work starts.

- Will the bumps in my vinyl floor flatten out over time?
- No. They tend to become more defined as the covering settles onto the shape of the base beneath it.
- Would a thicker vinyl have hidden the problem?
- Thicker material disguises small imperfections but does not cure them, and it can introduce hollow or rocking areas instead. Correcting the base is the reliable route.
- Do I always need a ply overlay on floorboards?
- For thin vinyl over boards, an overlay is usually the difference between a flat floor and a floor with every joint on show. On a very flat, tightly fixed deck it may be avoidable, which we would confirm on site.
- Can you prepare the floor without removing the skirting?
- Usually yes. Preparation works up to the skirting line, and beading or trims deal with the edge detail where needed.
