For anyone carrying a hard floor from the hallway up the staircase, rather than finishing the stairs in carpet.

A staircase that matches the hallway floor looks clean and is easy to keep tidy, but it is the most detailed part of any hard-floor job. Each step has a tread, a riser and a front edge that takes more wear than anywhere else in the house. LVT can go on stairs when it is glued to a sound, prepared step and finished with a proper stair nosing. That combination is what keeps the edge safe and stops the vinyl lifting.

We fit hard flooring on stairs as part of a wider LVT job or on its own. The survey looks at the construction of the staircase, the condition of each step and how the stairs meet the floors at the top and bottom.

Can LVT go on stairs?

Yes, glue-down LVT is the usual choice for a hard-floor staircase because it bonds to each tread and riser and has no floating joints to move underfoot. Click LVT is designed to float across a room, which does not suit a narrow tread that takes a heavy footfall on its front edge, so we would normally recommend a glue-down product for the steps even if the rooms either side use click planks.

Each tread is cut individually so the plank direction runs consistently up the flight. Risers are cut to match. Winders and curved steps take longer, because every piece is a different shape, and that is reflected in the quote.

Stair nosings and how they are fitted

The stair nosing is the profile that wraps or caps the front edge of each tread. It protects the vinyl edge, gives a defined line to step onto and covers the join between tread and riser. Some nosings take an LVT insert so the edge matches the floor; others are a contrasting metal or vinyl profile that makes each step easier to see.

LVT stair nose installation starts with a square, solid edge. Worn or rounded bullnoses are built up or trimmed so the profile sits tight, and the nosing is bonded or fixed to the manufacturer's instructions before the tread is laid. A loose nosing is a trip hazard, so this is the step we spend most care on. Our underlay and trims page covers the profiles in more detail.

Laminate and sheet vinyl on stairs

Laminate flooring installation on stairs needs a stair-specific nosing system, and standard click boards are not made for it. For most homes we would point you towards LVT, engineered wood or solid wood for a hard-floor staircase.

Sheet vinyl can be fitted to stairs, but forming it over every nosing is slow and the sheet is prone to cracking at the edge unless it is supported by a suitable nosing. On a domestic staircase, cut LVT treads and risers usually give a neater, more durable result.

What affects the cost of LVT on stairs

Stairs are priced by the step rather than the square metre, because the time is in the cutting and the nosings rather than the area. The number of steps, any winders or landings, the nosing profile chosen and the repair needed to the existing treads all change the total. Removing old carpet, gripper and staples is part of the preparation. The subfloor preparation service explains how we assess the base before fitting.

Frequently asked questions

Can LVT go on stairs?
Yes. Glue-down LVT bonded to each tread and riser, finished with a stair nosing on every step, is the usual hard-floor option for a staircase.
Can I put sheet vinyl on stairs?
It is possible, but sheet vinyl is hard to form neatly over each nosing and can crack at the edge. Cut LVT treads and risers are usually the better choice for a home staircase.
Do I need stair nosings with LVT?
Yes. A nosing protects the front edge of each tread, where wear is heaviest, and gives a clear, secure edge to step onto.
Can you match the stairs to my hallway floor?
Usually, yes. If the hallway uses a click LVT, we look for a glue-down product or a nosing insert that matches it closely and discuss the options at survey.
