Karndean vs Amtico: which LVT brand suits your room?

Karndean vs Amtico compared: collections, fitting systems, preparation and how to compare quotes like for like before choosing your LVT floor.

For anyone choosing between the two best-known LVT brands and wanting to compare them on the details that affect the finished floor.

Karndean vs Amtico is one of the most common questions people bring to a flooring showroom. Both are established luxury vinyl tile brands, both offer wood and stone effects in plank and tile formats, and both have glue-down ranges designed for a properly prepared base. We supply and fit both, alongside Polyflor and Moduleo, so this guide looks at how to compare them rather than declaring a winner.

The honest answer is that the brand name matters less than the specific collection. Each brand has several ranges that differ in thickness, wear layer, surface texture and fixing method. Comparing a premium range from one against an entry range from the other tells you very little. Compare collection against collection, then look at the room and the floor underneath.

Compare collections, not logos

Start by naming the exact collection, colour and format for each brand. On the Amtico side that may be Spacia or Signature; Karndean has its own family of ranges. For each one, note the overall thickness, the wear layer, the surface finish and whether it is glue-down or click. Those details describe how the floor will behave far better than the brand on the box.

Then think about the room. A busy hallway or a working reception area puts more demand on the wear layer than a bedroom. A kitchen with dropped water and chair legs needs a surface that copes with both. Our guide to LVT wear layers and commercial ratings explains how to read those figures.

Fitting method matters more than the brand

Most premium ranges from both brands are glue-down products. A thin, flexible tile bonded to the floor will show anything beneath it, so concrete is normally smoothed with a levelling compound and timber floors are overlaid with plywood before fitting. That preparation applies whichever brand you choose, and it is often the largest variable in the quote.

Click ranges are thicker and float over an underlay, which can suit some rooms where a bonded floor is not wanted. The click vs glue-down LVT guide explains the trade-offs. The product instructions decide the method, so check them before you settle on a particular range.

Design, borders and pattern

Both brands are known for design options such as borders, feature strips and patterned layouts like herringbone. These look excellent when planned properly, but every border and pattern adds setting-out and cutting time. Decide on the layout before comparing prices, because a plain plank floor and a bordered floor in the same room are different jobs.

If you are drawn to a herringbone or parquet look, our herringbone flooring page covers the planning involved.

Comparing Karndean and Amtico quotes

When two quotes arrive, check they describe the same scope. Look for the named product, the measured area with its cutting allowance, removal of the old floor, the preparation needed, adhesive, trims and thresholds. A lower figure that leaves out preparation is not a cheaper floor; it is an incomplete quote.

The most useful step is to see both brands side by side. Our Gillingham showroom lets you compare samples in daylight, and a free survey then confirms what the base needs before you commit. If you have already decided, read more on our Karndean flooring and Amtico flooring pages.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amtico better than Karndean?
Neither is better across the board. Both brands offer a range of collections, so compare a specific collection from each on wear layer, thickness, finish and fixing method for your room.
Is Karndean cheaper than Amtico?
It depends on the collections being compared. The total cost also depends on the area, the layout and the preparation, which often varies more than the product price.
Do Karndean and Amtico need the same subfloor preparation?
Glue-down ranges from either brand need a smooth, sound, dry base, usually a levelling compound on concrete or plywood on timber. The survey decides what your floor needs.
How long does it take to fit Karndean or Amtico?
That depends on the area, the preparation and the layout. Smoothing compound needs drying time before fitting, and borders or patterns add cutting time. The written quote sets out the work involved.
